Scots 10-0 for First Time in Program History

WOOSTER, Ohio – Program history was made on Saturday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium, as The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team downed Oberlin College 19-6 to improve to 10-0 for the first time in program history.

Wooster (2-0 North Coast Athletic Conference) scored in bunches throughout the game, and had at least three straight goals four different times in the victory. The first of those came at the onset when four different Fighting Scots scored in the opening 4:46, including sophomores Caitlyn O'Connor and Ashley Boersma, who combined for eight scores in the win.

The Scots' defense was equally as impressive in the early parts of the game, with junior Jenny Grossmann leading the charge. The Scots' midfielder turned in the first caused turnover-groundball sequence of the game, and Wooster forced three straight Oberlin (3-7, 2-2 NCAC) turnovers before scoring its first goal of the game.

Caitlyn O'Connor
Sophomore Caitlyn O'Connor scored three times in the first half, as the Fighting Scots improved to 10-0 for the first time in program history with a 19-6 win over Oberlin.

Wooster opened an 8-3 lead at the half, with O'Connor being the catalyst of the offense in the first 30 minutes. The sophomore fired in a pair of scores during the Scots' second stretch of three-plus unanswered goals in the game.

After O'Connor's back-to-back tallies, the Scots' upfield pressure proved too tall a task for the Yeowomen to navigate. Senior Laura Papp caused a turnover in transition, sophomore Alexa Mellis chased down the groundball, and went on to tally her 28th goal of the season at the 13:59 mark.

In déjà vu fashion to the first half, Wooster came out on fire to start the second period. Grossmann's goal at the 27:53 mark sparked a 5-0 stretch, with all the scores coming in a 5:03 span. Later, Wooster capped the game with a 6-0 stretch, and by game's end, the Scots had three players move to the cusp of 30-goal seasons in Mellis (29), Boersma (28), and senior Emma Lawrence (28).

Defensively, Boersma and Papp caused two of Oberlin's three turnovers during the second-half-opening 5-0 spell, while senior Katie Shideler logged two of her tri-season-high 11 saves during that stretch.

Four Scots picked up hat tricks on the afternoon in Boersma (5), Lawrence, Mellis, and O'Connor, while overall nine players found the scoring column. Other key statistical performances included nine draw controls by senior Megan Healy and five groundballs, four caused turnovers, and three draw controls by Lawrence.

Hayley Drapkin's four caused turnovers and two groundballs led the way for Oberlin, while Siena Marcelle tallied 13 saves.

Wooster outshot Oberlin 44-23, dominated the draw controls 20-6, and scooped up four more groundballs.

Wooster's 10-0 start bettered the 1975 team's 9-0 undefeated season, while the 10-game winning streak is the longest since the 2015 team won a co-school-record 12 straight games.

Next, Wooster hosts Denison University (7-3, 3-0 NCAC) at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
