The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team rebounded from its first setback of the season to convincingly win at Hiram College, 17-2, on Saturday morning.
Six different Fighting Scots (11-1, 3-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) scored in the first 10 minutes of contest, during which Wooster opened up a 7-0 lead. Senior Jordan Stone started the scoring spree at the 28:42 mark, while junior Jenny Grossmann tallied two of her first-half team-high three goals during the opening stretch.
Wooster's lead matched its current record at the half, and the Scots were just as locked in across other facets of the game. Sophomore Ashley Boersma and senior Megan Healy had the draws on lockdown with four each, and overall, Wooster won 12 of 13 in the first half. Defensively, sophomore Katie Shideler knocked aside the first three shots she faced on the day, before Hiram's (2-11, 0-4 NCAC) Katelyn Slomovitz broke up the shutout bid with just inside a minute left in the opening half.
Senior Emma Lawrence started the second half with a hat trick to up her season goal haul to 31. Coupled with Boersma and sophomore Alexa Mellis, both of whom had 30-plus goals on the year coming into play on Saturday, Wooster's now had at least a trio of 30-goal scorers in five straight seasons.
The Scots added three more goals in the contest down the stretch, including one by sophomore Katie Harvey, which went for her second score of the game.
Defensively, Wooster forced Hiram into eight second-half turnovers, and the Scots were credited with a caused on each. First-year Lillian Miller led the defensive efforts with a pair down the stretch.
Mellis joined Grossmann and Lawrence with three goals, while Lawrence finished with a six-point afternoon. Healy's balanced line included six draw controls three groundballs, two caused turnovers, and a pair of goals.
Slomovitz scooped up three groundballs and had two of the Terriers' six caused turnovers.
Wooster nearly quadrupled Hiram in shots, 32-9, while the Scots handily finished with more draws (17-4) and groundballs (20-6).
Noteworthy, Wooster's 13 turnovers were tied for the team's low count of the season with three other games.
Next, Wooster is at Allegheny College (4-8, 1-3 NCAC) for a 6:30 p.m. contest on Tuesday, April 16.
