GAMBIER, Ohio – The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team won its program record 14th game on Wednesday following a 15-14 comeback win at Kenyon College.
The win also kept the Scots in a prime position to enter the upcoming North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament as the No. 2 seed. The loss was Kenyon's first in NCAC play to bring both teams to 6-1 in the conference.
Kenyon's Lucy Somers put up a game-high five goals and four assists in the losing effort. Cassie Hudson-Heck also scored five goals, while Maya Fair and Avery Morgan each scored a pair.
Meanwhile, Wooster (14-1) was led by a four-goal performance from Alexa Mellis. Megan Healy scored three times while three others scored two goals – Laura Papp, Emma Lawrence and Jenny Grossmann.
Ashley Boersma and Caitlyn O'Connor each scored one goal.
Kenyon (13-3) jumped out to a 4-0 start until Healy put Wooster on the board with 21:43 on the clock in the first.
Wooster cut the deficit with a pair of back-to-back goals in the half. Grossmann and Lawrence scored about 30 seconds apart, and Lawrence did the same with Papp later in the half.
Mellis scored off an assist from Healy to close the half and to cut the Kenyon lead to 7-6.
Wooster turned the tables on Kenyon with a 3-0 start to the second half behind two goals from Mellis and another from Healy. However, Kenyon answered with four goals to retake a lead that reached 11-9.
Papp made it a 12-11 game before Healy tied it at 12 with 10:35 remaining. From there, Wooster took control with goals from O'Connor and Grossmann. Boersma scored the 15th goal with 1:50 remaining.
Morgan scored Kenyon's final goal with 1:28 left as Wooster won the ensuing draw control to run out the clock.
The teams were close on ground balls with Kenyon holding a 24-22 edge. Healy had a game-high eight.
Both teams had 12 clears, 36 shots and were one off in turnovers with Wooster on the right side of that statistic.
Next, Wooster will host DePauw University on Saturday to wrap up not just the NCAC schedule but their regular season as well. Action starts at 11 a.m.
