WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster women's soccer team won its first North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship on Saturday with a 4-0 win over Wittenberg University.
With the win comes the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships. It will be Wooster's third trip and first NCAA appearance since 1996.
The Scots got there with a dominant performance that was displayed the entire 90 minutes. They maintained possession for a majority of the game, kept the ball on their side of the field and outshot the Tigers 29-5.
Senior Erica White, who was named the MVP of the All-Tournament Team, opened scoring in the ninth minute. After Krenare Rakoci sent a shot toward the net that was blocked, White was there for the rebound and the score.
It was White's third goal of the tournament and 18th of the season. Earlier in the week, White broke the program's single-season scoring record in the team's 2-1 semifinal win over Kenyon College, a record that stood since 1987.
Twenty minutes later classmate Devin Frisby made it a 2-0 game, scoring from a tough position near the baseline.
After an initial corner kick from the senior, Frisby got the ball back near the corner and fired towards the net. The ball hit the Wittenberg goalie's hands and angled over the line and into the side of the net for Frisby's third goal of the year.
Wittenberg was hampered by more poor luck on the next goal as they were the recipients of an own goal just 21 seconds into the second half. After a cross, the ball deflected off a defender's leg and out of reach for the goalie.
Two minutes later sophomore Miura Wiley put the game far out of reach. White drew the goalie out and made a pass to the middle to Wiley, who sunk her third goal on the year.
White's assist gave her 41 points on the season. Along with her goal earlier in the game, it moved her ahead of the 1987 single-season points record.
Wittenberg (6-9-4) had just one shot on goal, while Wooster (13-3-3) had 14. Goalkeeper Maddy Ireton recorded the win by playing the entire first half to move to 3-2-1 on the season. Molly Hutter played the second half and recorded the team's lone save.
Kelly Corbin took the loss for Wittenberg. She made seven saves and was replaced by Emma Schewe with 20 minutes remaining. Schewe collected three saves.
Wooster is now 1-2-1 all time in the NCAC Tournament Championship game. The four-goal difference tied for the largest scoring margin in the championship game.
The Selection Show will be held Monday afternoon. The women will find out who, when and where they will be playing in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships.
