Women's Soccer Starts 2019 with Road Win

Mila Zunich
Molly Hutter

MARIETTA, Ohio – The College of Wooster women's soccer team opened its 2019 season with a 1-0 win at Marietta College on Friday.

Mila Zunich scored the game's only goal after she found an opening on the right side and scored in the 20th minute after her shot soared above the goalkeeper's reach.

The junior took a team-high five shots, all of which were on goal. She almost had her second goal of the game in the 80th minute if it weren't for a tough save by Marietta goalkeeper Katie Conkle.

Zunich is someone the Scots will rely on for scoring after tying for second on the team with four goals in 2018.

The one goal was enough to support junior goalkeeper Molly Hutter who notched the shutout behind four saves. The defense in front of her was solid all night as Wooster outshot the Pioneers 17-7.

One of Marietta's better chances to tie the game came in the 65th minute when Natalie Baker's shot went wide and just out of the reach of a diving Hutter. The Pioneers had one final attempt in the closing minute but a wide shot sealed the game.

Both teams tallied four corners. Wooster took 11 shots on goal as Conkle recorded 10 saves for Marietta.

First-year Helena Janczak saw her first collegiate minutes.

Marietta (0-1) finished 5-12-1 last year but returned 21 letter winners and all 11 starters for 2019.

The Scots (1-0) get Saturday off before heading to Adrian College for a noon matchup on Sunday. They will host Mount St. Joseph University on Sept. 7 for their home opener.
