Thompson Scores Both Goals in 2-2 Tie

Holly Thompson

ADRIAN, Mich. – In a battle of two teams who won their respective conference tournaments and exited in the first round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago, the College of Wooster women's soccer team and Adrian College tied 2-2 on Sunday.

Sophomore Holly Thompson recorded her first multi-goal game, scoring both goals for the Scots as they move to 1-0-1 on the year.

Goalkeeper Molly Hutter stayed busy with eight saves and held firm on 11 corner kicks. Wooster was outshot 22-11, but the offense was efficient with eight shots on goal.

A defensive miscue tallied the first goal of the game when Adrian's Caroline Fleming scored from 30 yards out. Hutter came out of the net to meet the ball, but a change of possession allowed Fleming to strike at an open net.

Adrian (1-0-1) had a similar opportunity a couple minutes later, but Hutter made the one-on-one save then.

Wooster answered in the 31st minute following a corner kick by Kelsey Stone. Placed right in front of the net, the ball bounced around until Krenare Rakoci tapped it to Thompson for the score.

Adrian made it a 2-1 game before the half with a goal from McKenna Mahoney.

Later in the second half, a cross from Mila Zunich allowed Adrian goalkeeper Ayverie Giller to put a hand on the ball but not coral it in. That gave Thompson the window to score in the 61st minute for her second goal of the game.

The game went into overtime where Adrian outshot Wooster 3-0 in the first, and Wooster outshot Adrian 3-1 in the second.

The Fighting Scots return to action next Saturday when they host Mount Saint Joseph University.
