Battling Bishops Force Overtime, Defeat Scots 2-1

Holly Thompson

DELAWARE, Ohio – The College of Wooster women's soccer team struck first after 65 minutes of scoreless play, but Ohio Wesleyan University fought back to defeat the Scots 2-1 in overtime Saturday.

Sophomore Holly Thompson opened scoring for both teams in the 66th minute with her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Thompson blocked a clear attempt by the goalie and was first to get to the ball to have a wide open shot at the goal.

However, that lead was short lived as Ohio Wesleyan's Kortney McGinnis scored eight minutes later in the 74th minute.

The 1-1 tie stuck until the end of regulation before Ohio Wesleyan walked away with a 2-1 win after scoring in the 99th minute via a goal from Ashley Smiley.

Ohio Wesleyan moves to 7-6 overall and 2-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. They closed the month of September losing four straight but have now gone 3-0 to open October.

Meanwhile, Wooster suffered their second loss of the year and first in NCAC play. They've scored just once in their first two NCAC games and are 7-2-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the conference.

Wooster outshot the Battling Bishops 15-14 and could not capitalize on having the corner kick advantage at 6-2.

Junior Molly Hutter stayed busy in net, making eight saves. Her counterpart Taylor Ford recorded seven.

Wooster will continue to look for their first win in conference play Tuesday when they travel to Hiram College.
