Scots Advance to Second Round of NCAA Tournament for First Time in Program History

The Scots celebrate after advancing to the second round on Friday.

WHEATON, Ill. – The College of Wooster women's soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships for the first time in program history, advancing 4-3 in penalty kicks after a 0-0 draw with Case Western Reserve University on Friday.

After 110 minutes of scoreless action, in which the Scots were outshot 26-7, Wooster and Case sent their best five into the penalty kick shootout. After falling in a 1-0 hole, Wooster connected on its last four tries, while Case (13-5-1) missed its final two attempts.

Junior Miura Wiley missed Wooster's first attempt. After her, Alexa Bencic, Brie Jarrell, Mackenzie Goltz and Mila Zunich all connected, while junior keeper Molly Hutter fended off Case's last two attempts.

With the penalty kicks knotted at 3-3 after four rounds, Zunich put Wooster ahead, and Wooster advanced when Bailey George's attempt hit off the left post.

Hutter set a new career-high with 11 saves as she collected her ninth consecutive shutout. That ties her for the school record for consecutive shutouts.

However, Hutter did surpass the record for consecutive shutout minutes as Friday put her at 869:02 minutes. The previous record was set in 1992 at 810:00.

It also was her 15th shutout, which puts her first this season nationally.

Corner kicks were hard to come by as Case collected four and Wooster had one. Case's keeper Lauren Unterborn finished with four saves.

Wooster (14-2-4) will move on to face host Wheaton College at 2 p.m. EST on Saturday. Sixth-ranked Wheaton (17-1-2) defeated Webster University 3-0 on Friday.

This will be the first ever meeting between Wooster and Wheaton.
