WHEATON, Ill. – The College of Wooster women's soccer team fought off a thwarting attack from sixth-ranked Wheaton College but one got away in the first 15 minutes, and Wooster fell 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships.
Wheaton (18-1-2) took 18 shots but it was its fifth that found the back of the net. Jensen Ellis scored from just outside the box on a strike that was assisted by Molly Thorne.
That was the only blemish on junior goalkeeper Molly Hutter's line. In a busy start, she collected nine saves.
Her consecutive shutout streak ends at nine games, which tied the school record. The 873:50 minutes in that span is the new school record to beat.
Wooster took seven shots, five of which came in the second half. They had a late push with five minutes remaining as two shots failed to connect. Krenare Rakoci had a shot blocked, and Mackenzie Goltz had a shot saved.
Wooster had four shots on goal and six corners. Wheaton had 10 shots on goal and 11 corners.
This was Wooster's first appearance in the round of 32 against a team that has seven Final Four appearances and three National Championships.
Both teams entered the contest with two of the top defenses in the nation. Both shutoutout their opponent in the first round. Wheaton has allowed eight goals in 21 matches and Wooster finishes with 11 goals in 21 games.
Wooster concludes the year at 14-3-4.
