MEDINA, Ohio – The College of Wooster women's tennis team met Baldwin Wallace University (1-6) in Medina on Sunday and left with a 9-0 win to open spring play.
In doubles action, Wooster (3-0) lost just four games collectively. First-year Ishika Gupta and senior Qingyue Li took an 8-2 win in the No. 1 slot, as did the No. 2 team of senior Shannon Sertz and junior Sarah Duran.
The No. 3 team with first-year classmates Amber Dinchman and Abby Kushner Benson had an impressive 8-0 win.
Gupta and Li carried their doubles win into individual comeback singles wins. With Gupta at No. 1 and Li at No. 2, both started their match in a 3-6 first set deficit.
Gupta then took the second set 7-6 after an 8-6 tiebreaker win. She then won the shortened third set 10-5.
Li avoided the tiebreaker in the second set with a 7-5 win. She then handled her own shortened third set 10-6.
Those two matches were shortened thanks to the rest of the lineup. Duran gave Wooster its fifth point in the match with a 6-0, 6-2 win in the No. 3 flight.
In the backend of singles play in the four through six flights the Scots did not relinquish a single game. Sertz at No. 4, Kathryn Materick at No. 5 and Laura Haley at No. 6 were all victorious at 6-0. 6-0.
Wooster will return to action Saturday when they host John Carroll University at the Aspen Racquet Club.
