Scots Win Two Matches at MIAA/NCAC Challenge

LANSING, Mich. – The College of Wooster volleyball team picked up its first win of the season on Friday night, rallied back to down Kalamazoo College in five sets on Saturday morning, and then fell to Olivet College in four sets in its finale at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association/North Coast Athletic Conference Challenge.

Wooster (2-6) cruised to a 25-13 victory over Saint Mary's College (Ind.) in set one of Friday's match before things tightened considerably. Nonetheless, the Scots went on to win 3-1 (25-13, 25-23, 21-25, 25-22). Sophomore Katie Billetdeaux's stellar weekend started with a 17-kill outing, and the Scots' middle hit .429 for the match. First-year Hayley Nash matched Billetdeaux's 17 kills, and the Scots' outside hitter logged her second straight double-double with 10 digs. In fact, the Scots had a pair of double-doubles in the win, as junior setter Meghan Botsch dished out 39 assists and had 12 digs. First-year Sydney Fitzcharles paced the defense with 20 digs, while the Scots had five blocks and held St. Mary's to a .193 attack percentage.

In Saturday's opener, Wooster rallied from a set down to top Kalamazoo 25-22, 25-27, 14-25, 25-22, 15-11, and in doing so, the Scots knocked the Hornets from the ranks of the unbeaten. Billetdeaux and Nash combined for 33 of Wooster's 60 kills, while Nash was one of two Scots with at least 20 digs. Sophomore Brooke Swain tallied the Scots' high mark in digs for the match at 22, while four Scots reached double digits. Swain added seven kills and three aces.

Billetdeaux's career-high 18 kills headlined Wooster's efforts during a 25-27, 25-16, 25-18, 25-23 setback against Olivet, which capped Saturday's action. The sophomore hit .516 for the match with only two errors in the miscue column and she added three blocks. Nash logged her third double-double of the weekend with 14 digs and 10 kills, while Botsch dished out 39 assists to pair with 11 digs.

Billetdeaux logged 51 kills and six blocks on the weekend. Other weekend tallies to note included 53 digs by Fitzcharles and 44 kills by Nash.  

Next, Wooster hosts its annual Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic at Timken Gymnasium with action starting at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, September 13.
