Wooster Has Three Earn NCAC Weekly Honors

The College of Wooster had three spring athletes earn North Coast Athletic Conference accolades, as baseball's Tyler Fugate was named Pitcher of the Week, and softball's Lauren Swinehart and men's tennis standout Matt Hoch garnered Player of the Week honors in their respective sports. The announcement was made late Monday afternoon by the NCAC.

Fugate combined to pitch eight innings in two appearances last week, and didn't allow a single earned run, posting a 0.00 ERA while recording 16 strikeouts and just two walked batters. He earned a save in Wooster's 4-3 win over eighth-ranked Marietta College while striking out a career-high nine batters. Then in a 2-1 win over Allegheny, Fugate struck out seven batters and secured the win to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Swinehart did her damage at the plate, going 9-for-14 (.643) while leading Wooster to a 3-1 record on the week. In a doubleheader sweep over Oberlin College, Swinehart went 4-for-4 with a double in a 9-3 win, and then smashed a grand slam in a decisive 14-4 triumph in the nightcap. She also hit a tie-breaking triple in the seventh inning of a 7-5 win over Kenyon College, wrapping up the week with nine RBI and seven runs scored.

The men's tennis team had a challenging week, as they battled Oberlin College in conference action, and then had three highly-competitive matches at the Great Lakes Colleges Association Tournament. The Scots posted a 2-2 record, and No. 1 singles player Hoch was the key cog in their success. Hoch went 2-1 at No. 1 singles, highlighted by a lengthy super tiebreaker win over Calvin College, and also won two matches at the No. 1 doubles spot.

Both the baseball (20-6, NCAC East 5-3) and softball (14-10, 3-1 NCAC) squads have a few more weeks of regular season action to come, while men's tennis (6-7, 1-0 NCAC East) is about to play its last four regular season matches over a seven-day stretch before the conference tournament begins.
