Michael Wielansky

Michael Wielansky of The College of Wooster was voted as the Valley Baseball League's Player of the Year, the league announced on Friday.

Wielansky, who is playing second base this summer for the Charlottesville Tom Sox, topped the VBL with a .432 (67-for-155) average on the year, and the league noted in its release that Wielansky's average is one of the highest in league history since the VBL became a NCAA-sanctioned summer league in 1961. The smooth-swinging right-hander's .489 on-base and .677 slugging percentages placed him at the top of the league leaderboard, while Wielansky also finished first in hits (67), runs (38), and doubles (18) during the 42-game regular season.

Earlier this summer, Wielansky was part of the VBL's all-star team selected for the Southern Collegiate Showcase, where he competed against squads comprised of other top summer collegiate players from leagues across the region. Additionally, Wielansky competed in the VBL's All-Star Game.

Wielansky was one of the key players in helping the Tom Sox to the VBL's best record at 32-10. In fact, the Tom Sox will be playing in the VBL's championship series, set to begin Saturday, Aug. 5 at 7 p.m.
