Wooster Kept in Check at No. 9 Baldwin Wallace

Ben Gbur, Wooster baseball BEREA, Ohio – The College of Wooster baseball team, which was averaging 10.5 runs per game coming into play, was kept quiet all afternoon, and it was ninth-ranked Baldwin Wallace University making the noise at the dish during a 12-1 win over the Fighting Scots on Wednesday at Fisher Field.

Baldwin Wallace (15-3) jumped ahead 3-0 on the strength of second-inning round-trippers by Sean Kolenich and Bijan Kamalipour, and the Yellow Jacket lead grew to 6-0 on the third on three consecutive RBI base knocks, including a double off the bat of Ryan Guggenheim.

Wooster (8-5) scored its run in the fifth on senior center fielder Ben Gbur's two-out double down the left field line. Sophomore second baseman Eli Westrick laced a single up the middle to start the frame and stole second for his first stolen base of the season.

Baldwin Wallace answered right back with a three-spot in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 10-1 lead. Kamalipour provided the pop with a three-run home run out to left center.

Garrett Miller (1-0) allowed one run on two hits in his five innings of work before giving way to Steve Spidell (save one). Spidell, a four-year Wooster letterwinner playing at Baldwin Wallace as a graduate transfer, thanks to the extra year of eligibility awarded by the NCAA for the spring 2020 COVID-shortened campaign, struck out five Scots during his four innings of two-hit shutout ball.

Westrick had half of Wooster's hits, and Baldwin Wallace walked just one batter on the afternoon.

Kamalipour finished 3-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored out of the eight hole. Three Yellow Jackets had multi-hit afternoons, and as a team, Baldwin Wallace finished with 12 hits.

Next Wooster (0-0 North Coast Athletic Conference) opens league play with a home doubleheader against DePauw University (6-9, 0-0 NCAC) on Saturday, April 2. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
