Chumita Drives in Seven In Game-Two Win

Tyler Chumita, Wooster baseball WOOSTER, Ohio – Senior shortstop Tyler Chumita rejuvenated The College of Wooster baseball team with a three-run home run in game two, then kept adding to his line, as The College of Wooster baseball team bounced back from a 12-4 loss to DePauw University with a 13-6 win in the nightcap on Saturday at Art Murray Field.

Wooster (9-6, 1-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) was behind 4-0 when Chumita put a charge into a Griffin Albright (0-2) offering and drilled it off the roof of L.C. Boles Memorial Golf Course's clubhouse. Chumita tacked on an opposite-field RBI single that upped Wooster's lead to 8-4 in the nightcap, then the education and mathematics major drilled a second three-run homer over the clubhouse in inning eight. Of note, Chumita's seven RBI are the most since All-American Dan Harwood's seven against Oberlin College on April 18, 2018.

Getting back to the nightcap's third inning, first-year second baseman Nick Pett walked, and he later scored the tying run on a Cameron Hawk wild pitch. Senior designated hitter Alex Gasper's RBI single to center marked the go-ahead knock, as senior left fielder Dominic Stilliana touched home on the play. Stilliana reached via a single up the middle.

Wooster added three runs in the sixth inning to take the 8-4 lead. Sophomore third baseman Jack Henderson's single to left field led off the inning, and two batters later, senior catcher Michael Thomas legged out an RBI triple. Senior right fielder Ben Hines' poke through the left side of the infield upped Wooster's lead to 7-4, while Chumita's fourth RBI came in the inning.

The Scots' hit parade continued after Chumita's second round-tripper. Junior first baseman Dane Camphausen and Stilliana reached via hits, then Henderson drove both in with a single through the left side of the infield.

Sophomore Eli Westrick (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win in a game he started. The right-hander worked eight innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on 11 hits. He settled in come inning four with no Tiger getting past first base over his final five innings of work, thanks in part to Hines' sliding catch that ended the sixth, and Thomas gunning down a base stealer in both the seventh and eighth innings.

Senior center fielder Ben Gbur's solo homer was the big highlight in game one. Westrick, who played second base in the opener, ripped a two-run single up the middle in the fifth that pulled Wooster within 10-4.

Joe Runnells (save 1) kept all chances of a comeback at bay with four innings of shutout relief in support of starter Michael Vallone, who improved to a co-NCAC-best 5-0. Runnells did not allow a hit in his relief work, while Vallone scattered just four in his five innings on the bump.

Senior Mitchell Reardon (2-3) allowed nine runs (seven earned) on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings. First-year Josh Livengood pitched a scoreless ninth.

Westrick, who did not bat in the nightcap due to pitching, was the lone Scot with two hits in game one. Chumita's day went in the books at 3-for-8 with eight RBI, two home runs, and two runs scored.

DePauw's Cameron Macon matched Chumita with two homers in the nightcap. Macon went 5-for-9 with four RBI, four runs scored, two home runs, and two stolen bases over the doubleheader.

Next, Wooster's off to Adrian College (10-7) for a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 3.
