Scots Continue to Find Success at Nicolay Field

Ryan Sullivan, Wooster baseball ADRIAN, Michigan – Great things continued to happen for The College of Wooster baseball team at Adrian College's Nicolay Field, as the site where the Fighting Scots clinched their last two berths to the NCAA Div. III "World Series" was where the Black and Gold won 14-5 over the Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon.

Wooster (10-6) roughed up relief pitcher Trevor Usher (0-1) in the second inning. Senior designated hitter Alex Gasper greeted him with a solo home run. In fact, two Bulldog (10-8) pitchers served up round-trippers to the first Scot they faced. Junior first baseman Dane Camphausen put the exclamation point on an eight-run second with a grand slam off Joe Toth, who was summoned out of the bullpen to try to clean up Usher's jam. In between longballs, senior center fielder Ben Gbur placed a two-run single into left field, then senior shortstop Tyler Chumita wore a pitch for an RBI with the bases loaded.

Wooster pinned another crooked number on Adrian in the sixth. Chumita's RBI groundout upped the Scots' lead to 10-3. Next, Gbur scored on a wild pitch, and two batters later, senior left fielder Dominic Stilliana sent the Scots' home run hitters around the bases on a two-out, two-run triple.

Four Scots – Gbur, Chumita, Gasper, and Stilliana – had multi-hit games, while Gbur swiped his 13th stolen base of the year. Chumita added three RBI, giving Div. III's leader in RBI per game 11 on the week. Seven Wooster pitchers worked in the win, including junior Ryan Sullivan, who collected his first win of the season with a scoreless inning in support of senior starter Dylan Carr. Sophomore Corey Knauf pitched a scoreless fourth. Junior Christian Johnston and first-year Thomas Gfell joined Sullivan and Knauf with a scoreless inning, working the sixth and seventh, respectively.

Gus Weaks went 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead the way for Adrian's lineup.

Looking back, Wooster captured the Mideast Regional titles at Nicolay Field in 2009 and 2018.

Next, Wooster is slated to play a single game at Otterbein University (14-6) on Tuesday, April 5. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
