Gbur Scores Five Times in 18-7 Win at Heidelberg

Ben Gbur, Wooster Baseball TIFFIN, Ohio – The College of Wooster baseball team ran its run of 20-win full seasons to 39, and senior center fielder Ben Gbur tore the cover off the ball during an 18-7 win over Heidelberg University on Sunday afternoon at Peaceful Valley.

Wooster (20-9) and Heidelberg (12-20) were meeting for the first time since the 'Berg eliminated the Fighting Scots in the 2019 NCAA Div. III Super Regional. Wooster's seniors, who were first-years on that team, logged an astounding day this time around, with the class accounting for 15 RBI, 13 runs, and 11 hits. Gbur alone went 4-for-5 with six RBI and five runs scored. The senior became the first Scot since 2018 to score five times in a game. Gbur's milestone home-plate tap was noteworthy itself, as the mathematics major legged out an inside-the-park grand slam in the eighth inning.

Gbur's infield single in the first inning ignited an immediate spark. Senior right fielder Ben Hines drove a 2-2 pitch out of Peaceful Valley for the near-immediate lead, and senior shortstop Tyler Chumita made it 3-0 when scoring on a 'Berg error.

Wooster broke things open with a five-run third inning. Senior first baseman Alex Gasper's single up the middle plated first-year second baseman Nick Pett. Next, Gbur roped a two-run double to left center, then Hines smashed a two-run two-bagger of his own down the right field line.

Sophomore designated hitter Eli Westrick scored on a 'Berg throwing error that would have ended the fourth, while in the fifth, a Chumita sacrifice fly and a Westrick RBI single made it 12-2. Chumita extended his NCAC lead in RBI to 54 with a two-run single in the seventh. Of note, entering the day no other NCAC player is above 35 RBI on the year.

Defensively, sophomore third baseman Jack Henderson started an inning-ending around-the-horn double play in the third, while the Scots stranded seven 'Berg runners in scoring position, thanks in part to senior left fielder Dominic Stilliana getting to a fly ball near the line to end the second inning.

Sophomore Corey Knauf (4-1) collected the win. He allowed five runs on five hits in five innings. The right-hander struck out six on the day. Junior Ethan Samangy was among the three relief pitchers who saw action. He worked a one-two-three ninth inning.

Hines backed Gbur up with a 2-for-4 day with five RBI, while Stilliana and Westrick tallied three hits apiece.

Keaton Mark homered twice as part of a 4-for-5 day for Heidelberg. Alec Zoeller took the loss, falling to 1-1. He allowed four runs on four hits in an inning-plus.

Noteworthy, Wooster has now won at least 20 games in every full season since 1983. The 2020 season is exempted from the list since it was canceled due to COVID before the Scots reached 20 games played.

Next, Wooster returns home to host the University of Mount Union (17-12) at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26.
