RBI Machine Chumita This Week's NCAC Athlete of the Week

Tyler Chumita The College of Wooster's Tyler Chumita surpassed 70 RBI on the year with a 13-RBI week for the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament-bound Fighting Scots, and the senior shortstop caught the eye of the conference office, which named the education and mathematics major as its NCAC Hitter of the Week on Monday afternoon.

Chumita capped the six-game stretch with a 3-for-4 performance with five RBI and three runs scored in what turned into a must-win game for Wooster to make the NCAC Tournament. Chumita's RBI count climbed to 74 during the 16-5 win over Kenyon College, with the RBI marking the most in a season for a Wooster player since 1997. He had at least one RBI in all six games last week and had three multi-RBI efforts.

Chumita enters this week's NCAC Tournament three RBI shy of W Association Hall of Famer and three-time American Baseball Coaches Association All-American Rick Sforzo's single-school record of 77 set in 1986. Wooster played 50 games that year and Chumita is at 74 in just 39 contests, and even more impressive, he has surpassed 70 RBI with just 19 of 60 hits going for extra bases.

This is Chumita's second career NCAC Athlete of the Week award.

Wooster (27-12, 12-6 NCAC) opens play at the NCAC Tournament at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio, against Wittenberg University (27-10, 14-4 NCAC) at 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 12.
