Spartans Top Scots

John Panstares, Wooster baseball WOOSTER, Ohio – Case Western Reserve University took Thursday's non-conference contest from The College of Wooster baseball team 17-7 at Art Murray Field.

Wooster (9-11) broke up Reece Marley's (3-1) shutout bid in the sixth inning. First-year center fielder John Panstares deposited a payoff pitch into left center to score first-year designated hitter Ryan Kramer. First-year right fielder Matt Roche followed with a two-run double to left field.

The Fighting Scots tacked on four runs during last ups. Sophomore third baseman Andy Heintz drew a walk to start that trip to the dish, and he scored on junior shortstop Grant Mitchell's RBI single. Senior first baseman Dane Camphausen's bases-loaded walk scored junior left fielder Bryn Langley, while sophomore center fielder Leo Widtmann's well-placed bloop scored two Scots.

Wooster's big defensive plays started with Mitchell snaring a Kevin Mackenzie liner to get the Scots out of the fourth inning. While two CWRU (12-11) runs came across in the frame, Mitchell's defense kept one more from touching home. Sophomore right-hander Alex Gerdenich struck out Nick Talarico in the fifth inning, and senior catcher Riley McErlean threw out Matt Trout for the strike out, throw out double play.

CWRU scored in seven of its nine trips to the dish and the Spartans exploded for 23 hits. CWRU broke the game wide open with a five-run fifth, which made it 11-0. Catcher Jack Anderson was the tough out, starting 6-for-6 before senior Hayden Sherry got him to line out to Langley in left in the ninth inning. Anderson had three singles, two doubles, and a triple in the game, scored five times, and had two RBI.

Jasiah Harris knocked in a team-leading five runs for the Spartans.

Junior second baseman Eli Westrick's three hits led Wooster, which also saw Camphausen and Panstares tally two hits. Overall, Wooster had 13 base knocks.

First-year Logan Creamer fell to 0-3. He allowed four runs on six hits in three innings.

Marley struck out 11 in his six innings on the hill. He allowed three runs on eight hits.

Wooster (4-0 North Coast Athletic Conference) resumes conference play on Saturday, April 8 with a noon home doubleheader against Wittenberg University (14-6, 2-0 NCAC).
