Senior Salute: Eli Westrick

Eli Westrick Q&A Throughout the spring semester, we are honoring our senior student-athletes with a "Senior Salute" series. Today's featured senior is Eli Westrick, a mathematics major from Ashland, Oregon. Westrick is a member of the baseball team.

Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: The College of Wooster had a great mix of academics and baseball.

Q: What does being a Fighting Scot student-athlete mean to you?
A: Being a Fighting Scot student-athlete means striving for excellence on the field and in the classroom and winning a lot of games.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: My favorite memories are playing in a super regional in Salisbury, eating dinner with the baseball team after winning the Alton Regional, and working Wooster football games in the press box.

Q: What is the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: The support that you receive from your coaches and professors.

Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: I am part of the statistics crew for home football and basketball games and did volunteer work at Montessori School of Wooster.

Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: Dr. Robert Kelvey who helped me learn how to understand more advanced mathematics concepts and to work hard in upper-level classes.

Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people and resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: Coach Matthew Johnson on the baseball team has really made a great impact on my mentality as a baseball player that I can carry over into my future.

Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: I am doing predictive modeling in RStudio to try and show a difference in pitcher effectiveness before and after the ban of the shift. I am using some math as well as linear regression to find differences in variable coefficients in a set of different models.

Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: I have had two spring break trips to Florida with my baseball team and they have both been unforgettable. Getting to spend so much time with your team and play so many games without having your schoolwork on your mind makes you so much closer with your friends and helps you create great memories for the rest of your life.

Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what advice would you give your first-year self?
A: Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone to try and figure out what you want. Take different classes, meet different people, and try to diversify your interests and activities to become the best version of yourself.
