Superb Pitching, McGowan's Web Gem Lead Scots Past Heidelberg, 4-2

Andrew McGowan, Wooster Baseball TIFFIN, Ohio – The College of Wooster baseball team's pitching was locked in, as five Fighting Scots combined to five-hit 21-win Heidelberg University in the Black and Gold's 4-2 win on Tuesday afternoon at Peaceful Valley.

First-year Michael Scarpelli followed up a sharp relief appearance on Saturday at Hiram College with a season-best five-inning appearance. The right-hander allowed just two hits, struck out four, and retired 14 of the last 15 batters he faced, including the side in order in the second, third, and fourth innings. Sophomore Sammy DeMaio fired a scoreless sixth inning before sophomore Cooper Baer and junior Thomas Gfell teamed up to get the Scots (16-20) through the seventh inning. Junior Alex Gerdenich collected his first win of the season, blanking the Student Princes (21-15) over the final two innings.

Sophomore left fielder John Panstares scored Wooster's first run in the seventh inning. Aggressive baserunning enabled the speedster to go first to third on sophomore catcher Nathaniel Huxtable's two-out single to right field. Panstares scored on a Heidelberg wild pitch to get Wooster within 2-1.

Sophomore first baseman Ryan Kramer's leadoff triple in the eighth inning kept the pressure on Heidelberg. Gerdenich, who was the designated hitter at the time, lifted the game-tying sacrifice fly out to center to score Kramer.

The ninth inning saw Widtmann motor around the bases for a leadoff triple to right center. A throwing error by Heidelberg's Cort Kramer enabled Widtmann to score from third for the go-ahead run. Kramer followed with a two-out, RBI double to right center for a key insurance run.

Sophomore second baseman Andrew McGowan had just enough extension to snare a liner out of the air off the bat of Cort Kramer in the bottom of the ninth inning, and that turned a likely run-producing single into a crucial double play. Three baters later, Gerdenich struck out Orion Kroah for the final out the game.

Kramer accounted for three of Wooster's eight hits and had a run scored and RBI. First-year third baseman Zack Barienbrock and Widtmann had the other multi-hit games for Wooster.

Reece McNeely went 2-for-3 with a run and RBI to lead Heidelberg.

Vincent Marimpietri took the loss, falling to 0-2 on the year. Marimpietri allowed two runs on two hits in an inning of work.

Next, Wooster concludes its season at Wabash College (21-17, 7-7 NCAC) on Saturday, May 4. First pitch is set for noon.
