WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster's long winning streak over Denison University in the teams' "Old Red Lantern" trophy game finally came to an end Saturday afternoon, as the Big Red spoiled the Fighting Scots' Homecoming and stayed perfect in North Coast Athletic Conference play with a 27-13 victory at a cool, wet John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster had won the previous 10 meetings with Denison, dating back to a 13-3 decision for the Big Red in 1994.

On Saturday, Denison (3-2, 2-0 NCAC) used a screen pass to John Wilson that went for 67 yards to set up the initial score. That 3rd-and-11 conversion put the Big Red inside the red zone, but the Scots defense' limited them to a short field goal, which Matt Ring booted through from 25 yards out.

Wooster (2-3, 1-2 NCAC) answered on the very next series. First, Brett Frongillo found Dana Obery near the right hash for a sliding catch and 18-yard gain, then the Scots picked up another first down on a Denison holding penalty in the secondary, which moved the ball to the Big Red 31. The ensuing play saw Frongillo freeze the defense with a pump fake and then hit Justin Rice in stride down the left sideline for a touchdown pass. It marked the freshman wide receiver's first career score. The extra point was wide left, as Wooster led 6-3.

The Scots appeared that they were going to open up a bigger cushion. After a bad snap on a Denison punt gave them possession inside Big Red territory, the offense advanced to a 1st-and-10 from the 13. On third down, an offensive pass interference penalty took Wooster out of field-goal range, and turned it over on downs.

Another short pass to Wilson keyed Denison's second score, as the running back got loose for 29 yards during a 12-play, 78-yard drive. Wilson would finish the possession, running off right tackle for a four-yard touchdown and 10-6 advantage with 5:25 remaining in the second quarter.

The Scots would strike right back, marching 70 yards in only seven plays. Cameron Daniels accounted for 28 of the yards when the tight end released free in the middle of the field and Frongillo saw him for the big gain. Robert Flagg completed the possession by finding a hole up the middle from two yards away for his third rushing touchdown of the season.

That put Wooster up 13-10 with 2:55 left in the half, but another quick score followed. The Big Red returned the kickoff to right around midfield, Wilson went for 10 yards on a run, and then Max Paulus connected with receivers Braden Layer and Lucas Graham, covering 26 and 11 yards, respectively, during a three-play stretch. Eventually, Paulus converted a quarterback sneak on 3rd-and-goal from the one to cap the seven-play, 52-yard touchdown drive and give the visitors a 17-13 lead at the :24 mark.

Denison's defense set the tone for the second half, forcing the Scots to go three-and-out on their first two possessions. Ring extended the Big Red's advantage to seven points with a 26-yard field goal, closing a seven-play, 42-yard possession that marked the only scoring of the third quarter.

In the fourth, Denison put together a 10-play, 55-yard touchdown drive. The two key plays were both Paulus passes to Sam Fioroni, as he found the running back over the middle for 3rd-and-12 and 3rd-and-10 conversions, the second of which accounted for 15 yards and the game-clinching score.

Statistically, Frongillo threw for 240 yards in his second game as the Scots' starting quarterback, completing 21-of-33 passes, and he also led the team in rushing with 53 yards on 13 attempts. Leading the receivers was Jordan McIntyre with eight catches for 77 yards.

Paulus was 13-of-24 through the air for 260 yards, but it was the Big Red's ability to run the ball that was the difference. Fioroni went for 125 on the ground on 28 rushes and Wilson chipped in 60 on 15, and the two backs combined for another 161 yards receiving, 96 on Wilson's two big first-half plays.

Wooster has a week off from competition to regroup and will next play at Washington University-St. Louis (2-2) on Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. CDT.
