Chase Ullman rushed into the end zone from 13 yards out, giving The College of Wooster a 27-21 overtime win at Saint Vincent College Saturday afternoon during a back-and-forth non-conference affair in Latrobe, Pa.

After being tied at 21 throughout the fourth quarter, the teams went to an extra session to determine an outcome. Wooster (1-1) won the coin toss, electing to play defense first. The Fighting Scots drove Saint Vincent (0-2) back two yards on first down, followed by two incompletions, including a pass breakup by Girard Ogletree-Crawford near the goal line, and the Bearcats had to settle for a 44-yard field goal attempt on the muddy, wet natural grass. The kick had the distance, but was wide left.

Wooster also lost yardage initially on its possession of overtime. Facing a 3rd-and-11, quarterback Richard Barnes scrambled for the first down, and two plays later, he handed off to Ullman on a counter to the right. Ullman took one step left, then got through the right side of the line, and had a wide hole to the end zone for his first career touchdown. In fact, it only marked the eighth career carry for the sophomore running back.

The schools' first-ever meeting on the gridiron saw a series of shifts in momentum. The Scots started out hot as Mike Tozzi recovered an early fumble, and two plays later, Barnes connected with Joe Stoffer behind the defense for a 42-yard touchdown pass and 7-0 lead.

Before the first quarter was complete, Saint Vincent went on a 12-play, 65-yard drive, capped by a bit of a trick play as running back Huey Ehredt faked a run and threw the ball to tight end Cody Strelick for a touchdown on 4th-and-1 from the 2-yard line.

Wooster quickly regained the advantage. Six plays into the ensuing possession, freshman running back Jonathan Miller burst through a hole on the right side and went all the way for a 47-yard touchdown, making it 14-7 early in the second quarter.

The momentum swung right back to the Bearcats, as they used a pair of 23-yard pass plays en route to a seven-play, 65-yard touchdown drive. Ryan Crawford accounted for the score on a three-yard rush.

Saint Vincent then attempted an on-sides kick, but the Scots were there for the recovery. They were unable to take advantage of the good field position, misfiring on a field goal.

Wooster proceeded to win the field-position battle, however, the Bearcats went on a 90-yard march right before halftime. It took 16 plays with Strelick catching his second touchdown of the day, this time a 15-yarder of the more traditional variety from quarterback Manny Speal, and that made it 21-14 at the break.

Late in the third quarter, the Scots used a formula to score that was very similar to their first touchdown. First, Shawn Chaffee recovered a Saint Vincent fumble, and four plays later, Barnes threw to Shawn Bowman, who was behind his defender, for a 35-yard touchdown pass. It marked the second career reception for the sophomore wide receiver and his first score.

The ensuing kickoff was the last play of the third quarter. Neither offense penetrated inside the opposition's 32-yard line during the fourth.

The two teams finished pretty even statistically, with the Bearcats holding a slight advantage in total offense (338-311), and the difference being the two fumbles Wooster pounced on in Saint Vincent territory. The Scots only turned the ball over once.

While Ullman finished as the hero, it was Miller with the breakout game as the freshman reached the 100-yard mark (103) on just 12 carries. Barnes completed 14-of-25 passes for 155 yards, and his top target was Jordan McIntyre, who hauled in six receptions for 49 yards.

Ehredt also produced a 100-yard rushing performance, finishing with 118 on 21 attempts, while Speal was 17-of-36 passing for 192 stripes. Matt Duffey was the leading receiver with six for 75 yards.

Defensively of note, Wooster's Rob Holtz was credited with 2.0 sacks for the second consecutive game.

The Scots have a week off from competition, then will open the North Coast Athletic Conference part of its slate by hosting Wittenberg University on Sept. 22, at 6 p.m. It will mark the first night game ever between the two rivals.
