WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster outgained DePauw University by almost exactly 100 yards (452-353), but four turnovers did the Fighting Scots in, as the Tigers prevailed 27-16 Saturday afternoon at a cool, wet John P. Papp Stadium in the teams' first meeting as North Coast Athletic Conference football foes.

The biggest play in the game came with just under 6:00 remaining in the fourth quarter. Wooster (2-6, 1-4 NCAC) was threatening to score at the five-yard line, however, a 2nd-and-2 pass was juggled by a Scots' receiver right into the hands of safety Robby Schuler, who returned it 95 yards for a touchdown to give DePauw (2-6, 1-4 NCAC) a 27-9 cushion at the 5:46 mark. Had Wooster punched it in or even settled for a chip shot field goal, it would have been a one-possession game.

The Scots bounced back with a seven-play, 65-yard scoring drive on the ensuing series that was capped by a 28-yard catch-and-run by running back Chase Ullman via a swing pass from Brett Frongillo, who subbed in at quarterback after an early injury to Richard Barnes. Ullman's second score of the day made it 27-16, but the Tigers recovered the ensuing on-side kickoff attempt and ran out the final 3:42.

During the opening quarter, the teams traded touchdowns. DePauw scored its initial possession, with Armani Cato rushing over the right side from seven yards out to complete a nine-play, 70-yard march. On the ensuing PAT, the Tigers had a problem on the snap and hold, which allowed Wooster's Lenard Rivers to block the first of his two kicks on the day.

Three series later, the Scots got on the scoreboard. A 30-yard pass from Frongillo to Jordan McIntyre opened the quick four-play, 51-yard drive that was capped by a five-yard Ullman run. Wooster was unable to take the lead, though, as the extra point bounced off the post, so it was tied 6-6.

The Scots did go ahead during the second quarter, as they moved into the red zone before settling for a 33-yard Tyler Gerwig field goal, ending a six-play, 47-yard possession.

Despite fumbles on its next two offensive series, Wooster maintained the 9-6 lead at halftime, thanks in part to Rivers coming around the edge to block a 36-yard field goal attempt.

The third quarter began with Mitchell Czerniak intercepting a pass to halt a DePauw drive. Another interception on the ensuing series may have cost the Scots a score, though, as the Tigers' Myron Burr picked one off in the end zone on a 3rd-and-6 play from the eight.

Later in the period, DePauw gained a 13-9 lead on Cato's second rushing touchdown, this one a two-yarder to finish a five-play, 37-yard possession.

Early in the fourth, the Tigers struck for a 34-yard touchdown pass from Drew Seaman to Jackson Kirtley as part of an 80-yard march in seven plays, and that was followed by the big interception return for a score that effectively sealed the outcome.

Of the Scots' 452 offensive yards, 341 came courtesy of Frongillo. He completed 21-of-38 passes for 226 yards, while his 115 rushing yards marked a season-high individually for Wooster. McIntyre continued his strong season with six receptions for 60 yards and four carries for 40 yards.

DePauw's offensive leader was Cato, who ran for 111 yards and the two touchdowns on 21 carries.

The Scots will close the home portion of their schedule next Saturday against Kenyon College (5-3, 4-1 NCAC) at 1 p.m.
