The College of Wooster football team (2-0, 1-0 North Coast Athletic Conference) hosts Wabash College (1-1, 0-0 NCAC) in its home opener at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 17 at John P. Papp Stadium. The game is part of the College's Black & Gold Weekend schedule. Wooster is coming off a 49-21 win at Hiram College, in what marked the lone league game that was on the docket over the opening two weeks of the season. Wabash is coming off a 56-12 loss to then-second-ranked North Central College (Illinois), the 2021 NCAA Div. III national runner-up.

On The Air: MCTV produces Wooster's football livestream, which can be viewed at https://northcoastnetwork.com/Wooster. MCTV customers in Wayne and Stark Counties can catch replays of the game on Ch. 22 and Ch. 621 on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, and should consult local listings for replay times. Q Media Wooster (WQKT/WKVX) will carry the game on WKVX 960 AM and online at https://wqkt.com/.

All-Time Series: Wooster is just 4-21 all-time against Wabash, but the Scots have won the last two meetings in the series. The teams first met in 1944. Wooster's win in 2019 snapped Wabash's 14-game series winning streak. Wooster has never won three straight games against Wabash.

Last Meeting: Then-junior Matt Ulishney (Greensburg, Pa./Serra District Catholic) broke up Wabash's "Hail Mary" pass at Wooster's 5-yard line, as the Scots knocked off the then-undefeated Little Giants 44-41 in an absolute thriller on October 16, 2021. Then-junior Lake Barrett (Columbia, S.C./Hammond School) knocked the 19-yard go-ahead field goal through the uprights with 5:29 remaining, and then-junior Matt Pardi (Arlington, Va./Washington-Liberty) fired off a 55-yard punt to Wabash's 20-yard line in the final minute. Wooster became the first team to score 40 points on Wabash at Little Giant Stadium since Wheaton College (Illinois) dropped 59 in the second round of the 2008 NCAA Div. III Championships. The win marked Wooster's second-ever on the road in series history, with the other coming in 2004.

Last Time Out: More records - a trend when Wooster visits Hiram - fell during the Scots' 49-21 win over the Terriers on September 10. Senior quarterback Mateo Renteria (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) surpassed alumnus Gary Muntean for most career passing yards in program history, and he now has 8,491 for his career. Renteria also matched Muntean for most passing touchdowns in program history with 65, with the milestone one getting caught by first-team D3football.com Preseason All-American Cole Hissong (Shreve, Ohio/Triway). Hiram's offensive line struggled to contain Wooster's pass rush, with the Scots finishing with eight sacks on the afternoon, two of which were recorded by junior linebacker Kobe Nadu (Summerville, Ga./Darlington School).

Offense Notes: Renteria's 396 yards passing against Hiram marked the fourth-most of his career and his ninth-career 300-yard game. Hissong now has six career 100-yard games from his tight end position after turning eight receptions into 140 yards at Hiram. Sophomore Brazos Gadler (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) joined Hissong with over 100 yards receiving at Hiram, marking the first time the Scots had two receivers with at least 100 yards since having three against Allegheny College on November 6, 2021.

Defense Notes: Wooster's eight sacks from the Hiram win are tied with Endicott College (Massachusetts) for the most in a Div. III game this fall. Wooster's eight sacks are the most since the team had nine at Ohio Wesleyan University on September 15, 2019, and are two shy of the program record of 10 set against Oberlin College on October 28, 2000. Wooster logged 15 sacks between its last two trips to Hiram. Wooster is currently seventh nationally, despite playing a triple-option team (Geneva College) in sacks per game at 4.5. Wooster has forced six fumbles this year, and first-year Q Renteria (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) leads the team with two. The Scots are first nationally with eight fumble recoveries and fourth nationally with nine takeaways. Wooster is holding the opposition to a 29.6 percent conversion rate on third down, and that ranks second in the NCAC.

Special Teams Notes: Wooster ranks seventh nationally with 42.17 net yards per punt. Pardi is averaging 48.0 yards over five punts this season. Barrett surpassed 60 consecutive extra-point makes in Saturday's win at Hiram, and he has now converted 61 extra-point tries in a row. The longest kickoff return in program history came against Wabash last year when Carter Warstler ran one back 98 yards for a touchdown.

This and That: Wooster has won four of its last five home openers. This is the latest home opener for the Scots since 2014, when Wooster hosted Hiram on September 27 after opening the year at Washington & Jefferson College and Oberlin. Wooster is in search of its first 3-0 start since 2017 and its eighth since 2000.
