The College of Wooster football team (2-2, 1-2 North Coast Athletic Conference) returns home to take on Ohio Wesleyan University (1-2, 1-0 NCAC) on Saturday, October 1. Kickoff from John P. Papp Stadium is set for 1 p.m. Wooster is looking to snap a two-game losing streak, with both losses coming to the NCAC institutions in Indiana. Ohio Wesleyan scored its first win of the year last Saturday, dominating Kenyon College 41-14.

All-Time Series: Ohio Wesleyan pulled ahead in the all-time series last year, with the standings now at 33-32-0. Ohio Wesleyan won the first all-time meeting 28-0 on October 5, 1901, in what marked Wooster's first game since 1890. Wooster had a campus ban on intercollegiate sports, so the Scots did not field a football team from 1891-1900. Wooster's most recent win in the series was a 16-14 victory on November 2, 2019. Then-first-year Lake Barrett (Columbia, S.C./Hammond School) drilled a go-ahead 25-yard field goal with :42 remaining, and then-first-year Dorion Talley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) secured the victory by recovering a fumble after Barrett's squib kick deflected off the Battling Bishops' Braydon Chitty. Wooster has won six of the last seven games in the series played at John P. Papp Stadium.

Last Meeting in Series: Four takeaways, one of which was returned for a touchdown, plus a blocked punt returned for a touchdown, enabled host Ohio Wesleyan to pull away from Wooster 31-7 on September 18, 2021, at Selby Stadium. Wooster's bright spot came just before halftime when senior Mateo Renteria (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) hooked up with EJ Humphries on a 12-yard touchdown pass. The score, plus Barrett's extra point, had the Scots within 10-7.

Last Time Out: Defending NCAC champion DePauw University topped Wooster 59-0 on Saturday, September 24 at Blackstock Stadium. DePauw scored on nine of its 11 possessions. First-year Louie Lindsay (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro Area Senior) broke up a pass intended for Gabe Quigley on a third-and-4 play to stop a Tiger drive early in the game.

Offense Notes: Wooster has done a good job not taking losses on plays thus far this season. The Scots rank 21st nationally and tops within the NCAC for tackles for loss allowed at 4.00 per game. Wooster's allowed just five sacks on the year, a total 63rd nationally out of 240 NCAA Div. III teams and third within the NCAC.

Defense Notes: Senior Matt Ulishney (Greensburg, Pa./Serra District Catholic) is third nationally with 13 tackles per game. Ulishney has at least 12 tackles in every game, headlined by 15 against Wabash College. Wooster has a three-way tie for most sacks on the team at two, with the leaderboard currently having senior Brandon Holt (College Park, Ga./Banneker), junior Kobe Nadu (Summerville, Ga./Darlington School), and first-year Q Renteria (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) at the top.

Special Teams Notes: Senior Matt Pardi (Arlington, Va./Washington-Liberty) continues to lead Div. III with 47.4 yards per punt. The D3football.com Preseason All-American has punted 17 times for 805 yards this year. The Scots are up to second nationally in net punting at 43.55 yards, with that average trailing State University of New York College at Cortland's 47.00 net yards per punt.

This and That: Wooster's last win on October 1 came against Allegheny College during the 2005 season. In that game, Andy Milligan hit a 32-yard field goal with :02 remaining to put the Scots ahead. Assistant coaches Zach Dennis (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks) and Kyle Adams (running backs) played at Ohio Wesleyan. Dennis was a three-year starter who rolled up 1,913 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns for the Battling Bishops from 2004-07. He ranked second in school history in receiving yards upon graduation, and as a senior, he was voted second-team All-NCAC and Academic All-District®. Adams was the Battling Bishops' leading rusher in 2008 and was named honorable mention All-NCAC following the conclusion of the regular season.
