Scots Conclude Season at Oberlin (Football Game Notes)

Louie Lindsay, Wooster football Wooster Football Game 10 Game Notes | Wooster Football Record Book

The College of Wooster football team (5-4, 3-4 North Coast Athletic Conference) wraps up its 2022 season with this Saturday's 1 p.m. game at Oberlin College (0-9, 0-7 NCAC). Wooster, coming off a 28-14 loss to Denison University (7-2, 5-2 NCAC), is in search of its third-consecutive 6-4 season. Oberlin, which lost 72-0 to co-NCAC-leading DePauw University (8-1, 6-1 NCAC), is looking to snap its 11-game losing streak.

On The Air: Oberlin will have a livestream of Saturday's game, which can be viewed at https://northcoastnetwork.com/Oberlin.

All-Time Series: Wooster leads the all-time series 72-23-2, and has won five straight. Wooster has beaten Oberlin more than any other opponent in program history, and the Scots have played the Yeomen more times than any other team. Kenyon College is No. 2 all-time on Wooster's win list at 56, while Denison is second for most meetings in program history at 90. The Wooster-Oberlin series dates back to 1903. The Yeomen won that game 30-0. Wooster is 29-4 in the series since the NCAC was founded.

Last Meeting: Senior Chris Savaglio's (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) sack set the wheels in motion for Wooster to get the defensive stop it needed, then the offense maintained possession for the final 4:57 of the Fighting Scots' 28-24 win over the Yeomen on October 2, 2021. Oberlin converted a fourth-and-1 play to move inside the red zone with about seven minutes remaining, then got derailed with a 10-yard holding penalty. On the second-and-20 snap, Savaglio spilled Chris Allen Jr. for a 10-yard loss. Pass breakups by then-junior Matt Ulishney (Greensburg, Pa./Serra District Catholic) and then-sophomore PT Fischer (King, N.C./South Stokes) surrounded Savaglio's sack, and Wooster was able to rally to the ball in time on Oberlin's fourth-and-30 catch-and-lateral.

Last Time Out: Wooster followed an interception by senior defensive back Langston Williams (New York, N.Y./Xavier) with a 62-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Mateo Renteria (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) to sophomore wide receiver Brazos Gadler (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek), then Denison rode its bruising ground game to a 28-14 win on November 5. Trey Fabrocini rushed for 223 yards and three touchdowns on 39 carries for the Big Red.

Offense Notes: Renteria is 59 passing yards shy of 2,000 for the season. Should he get there, he will become the first player in program history with four 2,000-yard seasons. In fact, Renteria is the only Scot with three 2,000-yard seasons. To date, there have only been nine 2,000-yard passing seasons in program history. Alumni Richard Barnes (2,046, 2010; 2,243, 2013) and Gary Muntean (2,940, 2016; 3,165, 2017) are the other Scot greats with two 2,000-yard seasons. Senior tight end Cole Hissong (Shreve, Ohio/Triway) needs three receptions to move into a three-way tie for the third-most in program history. Hissong is 11 yards shy of 2,000 career receiving yards.

Defense Notes: Ulishney hit 100 tackles for the year in Saturday's game against Denison. Mitchell Czerniak was the most recent Scot to reach the century mark prior to Ulishney. Czerniak logged 125 tackles - the third-most in program history since it became an official NCAA statistic - in 2014. Ulishney is now 10th nationally in tackles per game. First-year defensive end Q Renteria (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) leads the team with five sacks on the year. Should he get two in the season finale, he would have the most sacks in a season since Rob Holtz's eight in 2012. Wooster is still in the top-10 nationally with 11 fumble recoveries.

Special Teams Notes: Senior punter Matt Pardi (Arlington, Va./Washington-Liberty) is back to leading the NCAC with 44.0 yards per punt, a total that is third nationally and just a yard behind national leader Vincente Garcia from University of Redlands in California. First-year Chanden Lee (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton) became the 11th different Scot to return a kickoff this season.

This and That: Wooster has not won a game played on November 12 since winning 20-13 over Capital University in 1977, with that victory capping a 6-3 season. A win over Oberlin gives Wooster its third-straight finish above .500. Should Wooster win, it will have three straight seasons above .500 for the first time since a five-year run from 2002 to 2006.  Wooster is in search of its fifth win in the season finale over the last 15 seasons.
