Scots Overcome Lightning Delay, Denison for 2-1 Win

WOOSTER, Ohio – After a 94-minute lightning delay, The College of Wooster came out with renewed energy, scoring in 77 seconds upon returning to action for what turned out be the decisive goal in the Fighting Scots' 2-1 victory over North Coast Athletic Conference foe Denison University during Tuesday's field hockey match-up at Andrew Field at John P. Papp Stadium.

Amanda Artman accounted for both of Wooster's scores, and in doing so, became the NCAC's career leader in goals with 79. She was previously tied with Amy Kraus of Wittenberg University (1994-97).

Tuesday's first half saw Wooster (1-2, 1-1 NCAC) control the majority of the action, with an 8-0 edge in penalty corners being the most significant statistic, but the Scots didn't have anything to show for it on the scoreboard.

Denison (1-2, 0-1 NCAC) was the aggressor in the early moments of the second half and broke the scoreless tie when Wooster was unable to clear a crossing pass, as Catie Merrick back-handed in a loose ball in front of the cage.

The Scots quickly responded with a series of runs into the Big Red's end, and during another corner opportunity, Artman successfully deflected a Stephanie Standera pass by the 'keeper to tie it 1-1.

Not long after the contest was delayed due to the ominous weather, Wooster pushed the ball deep into scoring position again. Eileen Barrer had an initial shot that was stopped by the Denison goalie, but Artman was in position to tip in the rebound with 21:09 remaining.

The Scots' defense made the lead hold up, as only one of the Big Red's final three shots was on goal and it was easily saved by Liz Plumley. Plumley was credited with seven saves overall, highlighted by stopping a pair of breakaways less than a minute apart in the first half.

Wooster hits the road for the first time in 2010, traveling to arch-rival Wittenberg University (1-1) this Saturday for a 1 p.m. tilt.
