Big First Half Leads to 3-1 Win at Witt for Scots

The College of Wooster scored three times during the opening half, which paired with another solid defensive effort, was enough to earn a win at Wittenberg University, as the Fighting Scots prevailed 3-1 over their arch-rivals in a key North Coast Athletic Conference field hockey match-up Saturday afternoon at Springfield, Ohio.

Wooster (2-2, 2-1 NCAC) got on the board initially when Amanda Artman converted a penalty stroke 11:32 into the action for her third goal this season.

The difference in the game came late in the half, as the Scots scored twice in 65 seconds. First, freshman Nikki Sever notched the first goal of her career, poking in a pass from Stephanie Standera with 6:35 on the clock. Just a bit later, Eileen Barrer rattled the cage for the first time this year with an assist off the stick of Amanda Graeser.

It remained 3-0 until Boo Vernon of Wittenberg (2-2, 0-1 NCAC) tapped in a deflection off the goalkeeper's pads with 11:55 remaining in regulation.

The Scots' defense, which has yielded just five goals over the first four games, limited the Tigers to 14 shots overall, compared to 19 attempts on the other side of the field. Liz Plumley tallied six saves in the victory.

Wooster stays on the road for a game at DePauw University (3-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
