Wooster Comeback Attempt Falls Short in 3-2 Loss to W&J

A late goal by Laura German drew The College of Wooster within one, but the Fighting Scots were unable to complete a comeback, as Washington & Jefferson College held on for a 3-2 win during non-conference action Wednesday evening at Washington, Pa.

Trailing 3-1 with less than five minutes remaining in the game, Wooster (2-4) pulled within a goal (3-2) when German rattled the cage on an unassisted score. In a last ditch effort to tie the game, Stephanie Standera had a solid shot attempt get saved, and the Scots couldn't convert on a pair of penalty corners, giving Washington & Jefferson (4-1) the win.

It was Eileen Barrer and Amanda Artman who went in on Wooster's initial goal, as Artman found Barrer on a score at 46:32 that tied the game 1-1. With the assist, Artman became the North Coast Athletic Conference's all-time career assist leader, breaking a tie with previous record holder and former Wooster standout Meghan McLaughlin (1994-97). Artman now has 37 career assists.

Wooster goalkeeper Liz Plumley kept the Scots alive in the early goings, as she tallied six of her game-high eight saves in the first half. The Scots defense was beaten twice over an 11 minute span in the second half, though, turning a 1-1 tie into a 3-1 Washington & Jefferson advantage.

The Scots will be back in conference action this Sunday afternoon when they visit Kenyon College (3-3, 2-0 NCAC) at noon.
