In what has become a trend between two North Coast Athletic Conference rivals, The College of Wooster and Ohio Wesleyan University had a fourth straight game come down to a single goal, with the Fighting Scots pulling out a 2-1 triumph in double overtime Thursday at Delaware, Ohio.
The Scots (4-4, 4-1 NCAC) hadn't been involved in double overtime since 2007, but seni
or midfielder Kate Valora made sure their trip back was a successful one. With over 96 minutes
gone by, Wooster earned their 10th penalty corner of the afternoon, and Stephanie Standera dished a pass to Valora who rattled in the game-winner. The goal was Valora's first of the season.
Wooster topped the Battling Bishops three times in 2009, with the last two games being decided by scores of 4-3, and then 2-1 in the finals of the NCAC Tournament. Ohio Wesleyan got some revenge earlier this fall by spoiling Wooster's home opener 2-1.
Both teams initially got on the scoreboard during a 4:37 span late in the first half. Ohio Wesleyan took a short-lived lead with a goal by Christa Cocumelli at 23:09, but Wooster responded just moments later. Amanda Artman had a shot attempt deflected by the goalkeeper, and Eileen Barrer was there to knock in a goal off the rebound to knot the game 1-1.
Wooster led in shot attempts 18-10, and both teams each earned 10 penalty corners. Goalkeeper Liz Plumley made four saves, while her counterpart Abbie Martin recorded 11 saves in the setback.
Up next for Wooster is a tilt at Oberlin College (4-2, 1-2 NCAC) on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
