Clare Nelson-Johnson gave The College of Wooster a 1-0 advantage, and Isabelle Howes added some insurance later, leading the Fighting Scots to a 2-0 win over Wittenberg University in a North Coast Athletic Conference field hockey match-up, and both teams' regular season finale, Saturday afternoon at Springfield, Ohio.
The win propelled Wooster (9-9, 8-6 NCAC) into third-place in the NCAC standings, setting up a visit to second-place DePauw University (15-2, 12-1) in the semifinals of the conference tournament Wednesday at 3 p.m.
Neither Wooster or Wittenberg (9-8, 7-6 NCAC) could get on the scoreboard in the first half, but the Scots had the best chances, as Nelson-Johnson fired off four shots on goal that were all saved by Jenny Schaafsma.
Just over a minute after the break, Nelson-Johnson received a pass from Katie Furbee and blasted a shot just inside the far post to give Wooster a 1-0 advantage. Then in the 54th minute, Howes collected a ball that was played into the circle and beat the 'keeper for her sixth goal of the season, giving Wooster its 2-0 margin.
Liz Plumley recorded five saves in her third shutout of the season, while her counterpart Schaafsma made 11 saves. Wooster outshot Wittenberg 18-10.
