The College of Wooster responded to Washington & Jefferson College's score midway through the first half with three in a row during a 30-minute span to build a lead it would not relinquish, as the Fighting Scots picked up their second straight triumph, a 3-2 win over the Presidents in a non-conference field hockey match-up Wednesday evening at Washington, Pa.
Following the Presidents' (2-1) initial goal in the 18th-minute, the Scots (2-3) netted the equalizer when Clare Nelson-Johnson scored her sixth goal of the season to tie the game 1-1 at the 27:29 mark. Wooster then took the lead just 33 seconds before the halftime break, as Taylor Thorp rattled the cage off of a feed from Nikki Sever to make it 2-1.
It took around 22 minutes before the scoreboard lit again, but the Scots ultimately added a critical insurance goal on a penalty corner off the stick of Sever, which allowed them to endure another score by the Presidents and eventually notch the victory.
Wooster outshot their opponent by a 13-10 margin, including five attempts from Nelson-Johnson. Goalkeeper Carrie Mount made five saves while picking up her second career win.
After a slow start to the season, the Scots will have a chance to get to .500 when they host Earlham College on Saturday at 2 p.m. in North Coast Athletic Conference action.
