The College of Wooster scored twice during the final six minutes, including the game-winner courtesy of Isabelle Howes with just 16 seconds remaining to stun Denison University 2-1 during an important North Coast Athletic Conference field hockey match-up Tuesday at Granville, Ohio.

With the victory, Wooster (6-5, 5-3 NCAC), now on a three-game winning streak, forced a tie for third-place in the conference standings with Denison (7-4, 5-3 NCAC). Both teams are just a half game behind Kenyon College (6-4, 5-2 NCAC).

The Big Red scored their goal just past the midway point of a first half that saw the hosts manage an 8-5 shot advantage.

The Fighting Scots flipped the script during the second, furiously attacking Denison's end. Finally, their pressure paid off when Kate Brondyk deflected a ball in off an initial attempt from Shelby Stone to tie the score with 5:56 remaining.

Before Howes's heroics, Brittany Braun came up with a key play. Denison made a deep run into the circle past Wooster goalie Carrie Mount, but Braun, a senior back, was there to tally the defensive save and keep the game even.

Seemingly headed to overtime, the Scots forced a penalty corner as the clock ticked under 30 seconds. Receiving the ball at the top of the circle, Clare Nelson-Johnson blasted it off the right post, then Howes collected the rebound and knocked it in.

Statistically, Wooster outshot the Big Red 9-3 during the second for a 14-11 overall edge in that category, and Mount registered six saves in the win.

Next, the Scots will host Wittenberg University (2-8, 2-5 NCAC) Saturday at 1 p.m.
