The College of Wooster field hockey team constructed a 2-0 lead, then held off a rally by Washington & Jefferson College to take a 2-1 victory away from Washington, Pa., on Wednesday night, and even its early season record to .500.

Senior forward Claire Moffett, making her first career start, provided an inspirational lift as she scored during a penalty corner attempt midway through the opening half to give Wooster (3-3) a 1-0 advantage. She deflected a pass in from classmate Shelby Stone. It marked Moffett's second career goal and the eighth assist of Stone's career, but the first points for either this year.

The Scots built on that momentum, accounting for the game's next four shots, but were unable to add to the 1-0 lead before halftime.

In the second, Wooster goalie Carrie Mount made a series of saves, then the offense struck for its second score. Kerry O'Connor drove up the left side, got past the 'keeper who came out to challenge, and finished the scoring opportunity for the 2-0 lead with 14:41 to play.

Washington & Jefferson (5-2) made things interesting by netting a goal less than four minutes later and then earning a couple of penalty corners, but Mount and the Scots' defense kept them at bay. Mount finished with five saves in the win, four in the second half.

This weekend, Wooster will travel to Indiana for North Coast Athletic Conference games against Earlham College (0-5, 0-2 NCAC) and DePauw University (5-1, 1-1 NCAC).
