Early Penalty Stroke Jump Starts Offense in 3-2 Wooster Field Hockey Win

 Leah Prescott

Three first-half goals held as The College of Wooster field hockey team won its first game of the season, topping Hendrix College 3-2 on the first day of the St. Jude Classic, hosted by Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn.

Rachel Wetzel, who recorded assists on both goals in the first contest of the season, was on the scoring end of the College's (1-1) first strike of the day. The junior buried a penalty stroke less than four minutes into the contest.

Leah Prescott continued her hot start to the season, notching her third goal of the year. The junior connected on the feed from first-year Rose Taylor with just under 25 minutes remaining in the first stanza. The College would connect again less than eight minutes later with a duo of first-years taking over. Julia Boekkooi fed Erika Womack to put the Fighting Scots up by three.

Hendrix goalkeeper Gabryele Pochron stole the show from there. The netminder recorded 15 of her 18 saves after the three early miscues.

The Warriors (0-2) threatened midway through the opening stanza with four shots and two penalty corners. The Scots' defense was up to the test with senior Danielle Slichenmyer recording two of her four saves, and the defense blocking the two other shot attempts.

Hendrix broke through for its first score of the contest just over five minutes into the second half when Bailee Wallace's tally went into the cage. The Warriors cut its deficit to one with just under 17 minutes remaining on a score from Morgan Fires.

Wooster finished with more than double the shots (28-12) and four more penalty corners than Hendrix.

Wooster faces a quick turnaround with an 10:30 a.m. CDT contest against Rhodes (1-1).
