WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster field hockey team's challenging early season schedule continued on Sunday afternoon with a visit from Centre College, as the Colonels spoiled the Fighting Scots' home opener by a 3-0 count on Andrew Turf Field at John P. Papp Stadium.
Centre (1-3), which was one of the final 16 teams in the NCAA Div. III Championships field a year ago, scored twice during the last 15 minutes of the opening half. Shortly after a penalty corner by Wooster (1-4), the Colonels advanced the ball up field and took advantage of a failed clear attempt by the goalie when Megan Flocken sent in the rebound goal at the 21:30 mark. Right before the halftime break, Centre's Emily Schank touched in a well-placed pass near the left post from Cole Jordan, pushing the visitors' advantage to two.
Early in the second half, Maeven Barry nearly pulled the Scots within 2-1 via an outstanding individual effort. She gained possession around midfield, dribbled all the way inside the circle, and fired a hard shot from the right wing, however the Colonels' goalkeeper was there for the stop.
Another high-quality scoring opportunity to make it a one-goal game came during one of Wooster's four corners. Rose Taylor, positioned right in front of the cage, got her stick on a drive from the top of the circle, but her deflection was saved.
Centre clinched the outcome with a goal just moments later.
The Scots will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday night when Washington & Jefferson College (2-2) pays a visit to Papp Stadium.
