Early Lead Does Not Hold as Wooster Drops Heartbreaker in Double Overtime

The College of Wooster field hockey team dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 double overtime decision to host Earlham College on Sunday afternoon in Richmond, Ind.

Earlham's Megan Hut capped her hat trick for the hosts with the game-winner 1:29 into the second extra session.

Wooster (1-7, 0-3 NCAC) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead just over 12 minutes into the first half. Sophomore Lauren Abbott scored her first collegiate goal with 25:39 remaining in the stanza. Less than three minutes later first-year Rose Taylor would add her first collegiate goal, as the Scots' connected after a penalty corner.

Hut put the Quakers on the board 12 minutes into the second half. The goal marked the first by Earlham (3-2, 2-1 NCAC) against Wooster since 2009. Hut would tie the contest with just over five minutes remaining in regulation.

The Scots' had prime chances for the game-winner at the end of regulation with three penalty corners in the final two minutes. The Quaker defense held fast, limiting the Scots to one shot attempt. In the first over time session, it was Wooster's defense holding strong as the Scots warded off four penalty corners.

A remarkable streak came to an end with Earlham's win as Wooster had won an incredible 43 straight in the series dating all of the way back to 1993.

Wooster returns home to host Ohio Wesleyan University (3-3, 1-2 NCAC) at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 23.
