Two Late Goals Propel Wittenberg Past Wooster

 Maeven Barry

WOOSTER, Ohio – Two late goals by North Coast Athletic Conference rival Wittenberg University propelled the Tigers past The College of Wooster field hockey team 3-1 on Black & Gold Weekend Sunday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster's (1-9, 0-5 NCAC) Maeven Barry scored her second collegiate goal just over 10 minutes into the second half, which tied the contest at one. Sarah McGrath set up the play, feeding the ball in to Barry, who was able to spin and fire a laser at the goal.

Wittenberg's (2-7, 2-3 NCAC) Audrey Coler cleaned up a pair of shots in front of the Fighting Scots' goal. The first came just over 13 minutes into the contest when she deflected in Riley Trexler's pass, and she added a second deflection for a score with just over three minutes left in the second half, giving the guests a two-goal edge.

The Tiger's Paige Vanerstrom scored what turned out to be the game-winner with just under 10 minutes remaining. The senior buried a penalty corner feed from Blaine Donnelly to put the Tigers up 2-1.

Leah Prescott, Wooster's leading scorer, had three near-misses in the opening half. First, she beat Wittenberg goalkeeper Sarah Brownell, but back Michelle Murray was able to clear the ball out, and later Brownell made a pair of point-blank saves on Prescott shots attempts around the two-minute mark.

The Scots return to the road to play an 11 a.m. contest at Oberlin College (0-8, 0-5 NCAC) on Saturday.
