Wooster Edged by Second-Place DePauw, 3-2 in Double Overtime

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster field hockey team pushed the North Coast Athletic Conference's second-place team to the limit, but DePauw University's Paige Berliner scored with 5:54 remaining in the second overtime for a 3-2 win, ending a back-and-forth affair on a cold Saturday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster (3-12, 2-8 NCAC) held leads of 1-0 and 2-1, with both goals coming from Erika Womack, and received a career-high 18 saves from Danielle Slichenmyer.

After notching her first shutout late Friday afternoon, Slichenmyer kept DePauw (9-3, 8-1 NCAC) off the board with four saves the opening 20 minutes, then the Fighting Scots converted on their first attempt. A ball was played deep into the circle to Leah Prescott, who made a quick pass to her left to Womack and the first-year forward drove it inside the left post for the game's opening score.

Berliner answered for the Tigers about three minutes later with the first of her three goals.

Goal celebration
Erika Womack (No. 7) celebrates one of her two first-half goals, both of which were assisted by Leah Prescott (No. 16).

Womack struck again late in the half. Lauren Abbott dribbled into the circle from the right wing, played the ball inside to Prescott, who made a quick stop and again found Womack, this time near the left post where she touched in her fifth goal of the season to give Wooster a 2-1 advantage and the momentum into halftime.

DePauw evened the score again midway through the second half. During a penalty corner, Grace Goodbarn, positioned at the right wing, found Berliner on the inside, who stopped the ball and shot it inside the right post.

DePauw held possession for most of the first overtime, but Slichenmyer came away with big stops over and over again as she tallied seven of her 18 saves.

Wooster had the better opportunities initially during the second extra session. Rose Taylor had a breakaway on the right side, but the Tigers' Sarah Guendert came charging out to make a sliding save and she made a similar play to prevent Abbott from scoring as well.

Finally, DePauw took advantage of another penalty corner. Receiving the ball at the top of the circle, Addie Ball passed it inside to Berliner, who stopped the ball, and made a back-handed shot into the upper right for the game-winner.

The Scots will look to put the heartbreaker behind them when they travel to Ohio Wesleyan University (6-8, 4-6 NCAC) on Wednesday afternoon.
