Wooster Falls 3-2 in Seventh Overtime Contest of Season

 Maeven Barry

The College of Wooster field hockey team headed into overtime for the seventh time this season, and fourth time in the last five games, to decide Wednesday afternoon's North Coast Athletic Conference contest. Host Denison University prevailed with a 3-2 win at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio.

Lucy Pearsall scored the game-winner for Denison (12-6, 10-3 NCAC), ricocheting a shot off of a Fighting Scot defender 2:13 into the extra period.

With time running out in regulation, Wooster (5-14, 3-10 NCAC) sophomore Lauren Abbott tipped the game-tying goal over the head of Denison goalkeeper Ellen Westfall with 37 seconds remaining. The goal was Abbott's fourth of the season.

Maeven Barry staked Wooster to a 1-0 lead with just over 20 minutes remaining in the first half. The first-year banged in her fourth tally of the year from just inside the arc.

Denison's Jen Durbin tipped in the equalizer with 4:23 remaining in the opening stanza, redirecting in an attempt by Pearsall. The Big Red took a 2-1 lead 4:44 into the second half when Tori Rapillo was able to deflect in a score.

The Big Red nearly won 23 seconds into the extra session, but Rachel Wetzel came through with the defensive save for the Scots. Denison maintained possession with two penalty corners prior to Pearsall's game-winner.

Danielle Slichenmyer finished with six saves on the afternoon, one of which came with no time remaining in regulation.

Wooster closed out its season with a noon contest against Oberlin College (1-15, 0-12 NCAC) at John P. Papp Stadium on Saturday. The game will be the final collegiate game for Slichenmyer, Emily Dean-McKinney, Anjela Galimberti, and Isabel Perman.
