WOOSTER TRIUMPHANT IN RETURN TO ACTION, THANKS TO AGATUCCI'S OT SCORE

Katie Agatucci WASHINGTON, Pa. – Senior Katie Agatucci gathered a deflected cross pass and immediately buried the game-winner into the left corner of the cage from just over 10 yards out to lift The College of Wooster field hockey team to a thrilling 4-3 overtime win over host Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday afternoon at Cameron Stadium.

Wooster (1-0), which played its first contest since November 3, 2019, charged out of the gate with two goals in the first 7:20. Agatucci book-ended the game's scoring by finishing a cross from sophomore Ciara O'Connor in the third minute. Just over five minutes later, junior Jill Murray beat Washington & Jefferson (0-1) 'keeper Anastacia Godat with a touch shot off a penalty corner, with senior Caitlyn O'Connor assisting on the play.

The Fighting Scots turned in a similar offensive surge at the second period's onset. Junior Lucy Agurkis and Agatucci were denied by Godat just over a minute into the stanza, and not long after, Agatucci nearly found the cage for the second time, with her shot deflecting off the post. Wooster stuck with it, and in the 19th minute, Murray collected a failed clear and scored to put Wooster up 3-1.

A failed clearing pass helped set up Agatucci's game-winner, as the statistical and data sciences major beat a Washington & Jefferson player to the ball, and that set up a transition chance just before the decisive score.

Washington & Jefferson tied the game with 2:07 remaining in regulation when Hailey Wachowiak finished a breakaway off a turnover for her third goal of the game.

Wooster outshot Washington & Jefferson 18-12, and both teams were on point with 26 of the 30 combined shots on goal. Junior Zoë Semersky made eight saves in her first collegiate start, while Godat stopped 10 on the afternoon.

The Scots also had a 12-8 edge in penalty corners.

Wooster's idle until a 4 p.m. home non-conference game against Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday, September 15.
