Scots Drop Home Opener

Maddie Peek WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster field hockey team made its long-awaited home debut on Wednesday afternoon, and the Fighting Scots dropped a 4-0 decision to Ohio Wesleyan University in non-conference action at John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster (1-1) started to find its offensive footing in the fourth period. The Scots' best chance arguably came in the 50th minute. There, sophomore Ciara O'Connor inserted a penalty corner to the top, where senior, and sister, Caitlyn O'Connor fired off a shot that was stopped by Ohio Wesleyan's (3-1) Brynn Schlesinger. Schlesinger was up to the task again moments later, denying junior Jill Murray's rebound attempt. Later in the fourth, O'Connor's shot was turned aside again by Schlesinger.

Ohio Wesleyan's Sarah Hanley finished a back-hander from about five yards out for the game's first score in the seventh minute, and Allie Crawford put home a rebound feed from Sarah Hanley in the 10th minute that made it 2-0.

Veronica Hardman upped OWU's lead to 3-0 with a one-timer from just inside the circle in the second, and she scored again in the third, this time finishing a pass from Cate Kuhlman.

Ohio Wesleyan doubled up Wooster 14-7 on shots and had a 9-3 edge on penalty corners. The Battling Bishops kept the Scots without a penalty corner try until the fourth period.

Juniors Zoë Semersky and Lucy Segal split time in goal and made two saves each. Segal's action marked the psychology major's first collegiate stint between the pipes in a game setting.

Meg McCarthy and Schlesinger split time in goal for OWU.

Next, Wooster's at Concordia University Wisconsin (2-3) for an 11 a.m. ET game on Saturday, September 18.
