Scots Score Early Again, Down Tigers, 2-1

Syd Schuster, Wooster Field Hockey WOOSTER, Ohio – A familiar blueprint – score in the opening minutes – led to another win for The College of Wooster field hockey team, which overwhelmed visiting DePauw University during a 2-1 win on Saturday morning at John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster's (4-1) Lucy Agurkis delivered Saturday's first goal 1:26 into the contest on a penalty stroke, in what went down in the books as the junior's first collegiate goal. Prior to that, Wooster already had two shots on the day, and the Scots would have been up 1-0 earlier, except for Alexandra May made a defensive save in the first minute.

Syd Schuster cleaned up a rebound in the third period that made it 2-0, on what marked the senior's first goal of the year. Prior to that, DePauw's (1-4) Allie Duranceau stopped junior Jill Murray's initial shot, only to see the carom go right to Schuster, who had an empty cage to work with.

DePauw's Maddie DeAscentis halved the lead by burying a shot from just inside the circle with 1:01 remaining in the contest.

Defensively, the Scots had an answer for the Tigers' first four penalty corners on the day. Schuster took charge on the first by breaking up a cross pass that was headed inside the circle. In the second period, sophomore Maddie Peek cleared away a cross pass, while in the fourth, Agurkis made a defensive save on DePauw star Allison Quaceknbush's shot. Later, DeAsentis fired off a shot about 30 seconds before her score that was blocked en route toward the goal.

Wooster outshot DePauw 17-4. Duranceau made six saves in her three periods of work, Scarlett Oaks added three in the fourth period, and the Tigers had two defensive saves on the day. Agurkis' defensive save marked Wooster's lone tally in the save column, as just two of the Tigers' four shot attempts were on target.

Of note, Wooster's scored in the first 2:12 of all four victories this year.

Next, Wooster's at Kenyon College (4-2, 0-0 NCAC) for a 4:30 p.m. game on Wednesday, September 29.
