Wittenberg Needs Overtime to Down Scots

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The College of Wooster field hockey team forced overtime on Saturday but fell 3-2 to Wittenberg University in a non-conference game.

It was the first of two games between the teams as both will see each other again on Tuesday in Wooster to start North Coast Athletic Conference action.

Wittenberg struck first as both teams played to a scoreless first period. Regan Mazzulli scored in the 18th minute, but Wooster did not let the Tigers enjoy the lead for long.

In the 23rd minute, Caitlyn O'Connor had a shot saved but her sister Ciara O'Connor was able to collect the rebound and score. It was the sophomore's first collegiate goal.

The score remained tied at one until the fourth period when Mazzulli again scored, this time in the 54th minute.

However, the Scots had another quick answer in the 58th minute. Senior Syd Schuster led classmate Katie Agatucci on a breakaway with just Agatucci and the goalie, who Agatucci was able to beat and score.

The Scots forced overtime but could not stop the back-and-forth goal distribution that happened throughout the game. Wittenberg hit the game-winner in the 68th minute as a cross from Katie Webber gave Allison Ormsby a clear target at the left side of the cage.

Zoë Semersky made six saves in the cage, while her counterpart, Emma Hurguy made 11.

Wooster outshot the Tigers 21-18, including a 5-1 difference in the fourth period, but could not find an opportunity in overtime.

Wittenberg moves to 6-4, while Wooster drops to 4-3.
