Scots Suffer First NCAC Loss

Maddie Peek Denison University made offense hard to come by for the Scots as The College of Wooster field hockey team took its first North Coast Athletic Conference loss on Thursday, 3-1.

Wooster only mustered two shots for the game playing without leading scorer Katie Agatucci. Denison, the reigning NCAC champ from 2019, only improved their offensive opportunities as the game went along, taking 18 shots.

Wooster had one shot in the first period and its next came in the fourth following a penalty corner. Sophomore Ciara O'Connor found Syd Schuster at the top of the circle and the senior buried her shot in the back of the cage.

It was Schuster's second goal of the year.

That goal gave Wooster some life as it cut the lead to 2-1 in the 51st minute. However, Denison put the game out of reach about six minute later on a goal by Abigail Hano.

Both teams went scoreless in the first period, but Denison scored early in the second period as Hano made a move along the left side to score a goal.

Denison made it 2-0 in the third when Meg Baylis came away with a score after a scrum in front of the cage.

There we no penalty corners in the first half, but by the end of the game Denison ended up taking seven to Wooster's one.

Zoë Semersky made nine saves in the cage.

Denison moves to 4-5 overall and 1-0 in the NCAC. Wooster drops to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Wooster travels to Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday.
