Scots Tripped Up In Meadville, 3-2

Syd Schuster College of Wooster Field Hockey MEADVILLE, Ohio – The College of Wooster field hockey team's postseason chances took a hit on Tuesday evening, with Allegheny College's 3-2 victory spoiling the Fighting Scots' bid to move up to fourth-place in the conference standings.

Allegheny (8-8, 2-5 North Coast Athletic Conference) struck first in the eighth minute when Bella Cowen spun around and deposited a goal into the cage. Cowen struck again in the 32nd minute, as the Gators converted on a penalty corner, and less than three minutes later, Ramsay Smith made it 3-0.

Sophomore Ciara O'Connor put Wooster (7-8, 3-4 NCAC) on the board in the 38th minute with a rebound goal, in what marked her fourth time scoring in the last six games.

Later, senior Katie Agatucci played a ball ahead to classmate Syd Schuster. Schuster's impressive stick handling led to the midfielder springing free from the last defender, then beating the Gators' 'keeper, prior to placing her seventh goal of the year into the cage. Of note, the score marked Schuster's 42nd of her career, and she's now tied with alumna Anlyn Addis for the seventh-most goals in program history.

Wooster certainly had the better chances with an 11-6 edge on shots, and eight of the Scots' attempts were on target compared to just three by the Gators. Hallie Reiger came through for Allegheny with six saves.

Penalty corners were few and far between on the night, with the teams combining for just five, and only one in the second half.

At 3-4 in conference play, Wooster is tied for sixth-place, and the Scots sit a half game back of fourth-place, as most of this week's midweek action league-wide takes place on Wednesday. The top four teams qualify for next week's conference tournament, and eight of the nine teams in the conference are still in contention for those spots.

Wooster's final regular-season contest takes place on Saturday at 5 p.m. against NCAC co-leader Kenyon College (11-4, 5-1 NCAC). The Scots will honor their senior class – Agatucci, Caitlyn O'Connor, Schuster, and Katie Thompson at the game.
