Scots Drop Season Opener to Centre

Maddie Peek, Wooster field hockey WOOSTER, Ohio – Offense was hard to come by in Jomara Coghlan's debut as The College of Wooster field hockey team's head coach, with visiting Centre College shutting out the Fighting Scots 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.

Centre (1-1) pressured early with six penalty corners in the first period. Ellie Dunham buried a rebound into the cage for the day's first score in the 11th minute, and Peyton Gahm doubled the lead just over two minutes later by pushing a loose ball across the line.

Wooster (0-1) first-year Natalie Katzenmeyer nearly had collegiate goal number one just before halftime. A rebound after junior Ciara O'Connor's shot sailed wide found its way to Katzenmeyer near the post, and the Scots' first-year was denied by Carlie McKenry, who made a spectacular lunging save on the shot. Wooster earned its first penalty corner of the day leading up to the two shot attempts.

Claire Martin scored Centre's other two goals, the second of which came on a one-timer following a penalty corner insertion in the 48th minute.

Wooster's final scoring chance came in the final two minutes of the contest. Junior Maddie Peek's shot was blocked by a Centre defender on its way to the cage.

Wooster's defense turned in a strong effort, limiting Centre, a 2021 NCAA Div. III Championships qualifier, to 14 shots, including just five in the final 45 minutes of play. First-year Cate Barkdoll made three saves to lead the Scots.

Centre backed up its 14-3 shot advantage with an 8-3 lead on penalty corners.

Next, Wooster travels to Earlham College (0-1) for a noon non-conference game on Saturday, September 10.
