Johnson Scores in Final Seconds at Allegheny

Maddie Peek MEADVILLE, Pennsylvania – A positive ending was turned in by The College of Wooster field hockey team, which scored with :02.7 remaining in Wednesday evening's 3-1 loss at Allegheny College.

Wooster (1-3) junior Olivia Nengel intercepted Allegheny's (5-1) clearing pass on the sideline in the closing seconds. Junior Maddie Peek took charge, bringing the ball inside the circle, then dished it off to first-year Natalie Katzenmeyer. The Gators, including 'keeper Hallie Reiger, swarmed in around Katzenmeyer giving the Scots' first-year a lane to cross the ball to first-year Mary Johnson. Johnson won the one-on-one battle with a Gator defender en route to depositing her second goal of the year into the cage.

The game, which took place on National Field Hockey Day, had a quick start, with Allegheny's Emily Robles scoring just 2:47 into the contest. The Gators' Hannah Sharp doubled the lead 2:28 into the second half. Wooster threatened at the end of the third period with two penalty corners and two shots at the buzzer, but could not convert.

Debbie Nalesnik added a fourth-period insurance goal for the Gators.

Allegheny outshot Wooster 13-6 and finished with a slight 7-4 cushion on penalty corners. First-year Cate Barkdoll logged five saves for the Scots and Reiger had four for the Gators.

Next, Wooster hosts Denison University (2-2) at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 17. The game is part of the College's Black & Gold Weekend.
