OT Thriller Goes to Denison

Cate Barkdoll, Wooster field hockey WOOSTER, Ohio – Wild overtimes ended in heartbreaking fashion for The College of Wooster field hockey team, which fell 1-0 to visiting Denison University on Saturday at John P. Papp Stadium.

Denison's (3-2) Madeleine Hunt finished a Katherine Flanagan cross to the back post in double overtime for the game-winner in the 78th minute. Several of Wooster's (1-4) offensive chances came immediately prior to Hunt's game-winner. Wooster earned its second penalty corner of the game in the 71st minute and fired off three shot attempts that were all saved by Big Red 'keeper Athena Joannou.

Both teams had potential fast-break opportunities in the first overtime, but each team's forwards could not track down the lead pass. Joannou broke up Wooster's lead pass that had too much pace on it by knocking it out of harm's way. Then, Wooster first-year Cate Barkdoll did likewise, coming nearly to the top of the circle to thwart Denison's 3-on-1 opportunity.

Later, Wooster junior Delaney Gross' attempt at a game-winner sailed wide of the cage on a 2-on-1 chance. Less than a minute later, Denison's Nina Casingal's cross shot from just inside the circle also went wide of the cage.

Senior Lucy Agurkis recorded a defensive save on Meg Baylis' shot attempt in the 49th minute, and the Scots also had a defensive save logged by junior Maddie Peek in the second period.

The second period is where most of the offensive chances came in regulation, with eight of Denison's shots coming during that stanza. For the game, Denison outshot Wooster 13-6 and had a 10-2 edge on corners.

Joannou turned aside four shots in the shutout, while Barkdoll tallied five, one of which came on a penalty stroke in the second period.

Wooster's four-game homestand continues against Oberlin College (2-2) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 20.
